Thomas was raised in Chicago and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He married Ruth (nee Baylie) Foglestad on April 24, 1965, in Chicago, and resided there before moving his family to Arlington Heights, where he lived for over fifty years, until his passing.

Thomas was an active member of American Legion Merle Guild Post 208 in Arlington Heights, having served as past Commander and with the Color Guard. He also served as past District Commander of the American Legion 9th District in Illinois and was a member of the Marine Corps League and V.F.W. Post 3579.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol (Kimberly) Foglestad; son, Michael Foglestad (partner Cheryl); grandson, Andrew (Angela) Foglestad; and granddaughter, Kristin Foglestad. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rita (Baylie) Louis; and niece, Teresa Louis.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and stepmother, Florence "Dolores" Swanson.
