Eulogy for Thomas J. “Tom” Gierut

Comrade Thomas J. Gierut entered into the service of our country on February 18, 1966 to defend, and yes, if need be to die for his country and flag.  Comrade Tom Gierut is a Korean War veteran and a Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Army on foreign lands in the Pacific Theater  in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division, 7th Infantry Division. Comrade Tom Gierut earned the following medals: the Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM), the Vietnam Campaign Medal (VCM), the Army Commendation Medal (ACM), the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Cold War Citation.  He served his country with distinction and was honorably discharged from the United States Army on June 14, 1968 with the rank of Sp/4. He fulfilled his 6 year reserve obligation on February 17, 1972. Thomas J. Gierut is a retired Chicago Police Dept. Officer.  Thomas J. Gierut was a life member of the Park Ridge / Niles Memorial VFW Post 3579 and served on the VFW Service Officer team performing numerous wakes. 


Eulogy for Charles Adam Simokaitis

Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis entered into the service of our country to Comrade Charlie Simokaitis served in the United States Army on foreign lands in the Pacific Theater in the Korean War. After graduating from the Structural Steel Course at Fort Leonard Wood, he was sent to Korea with the 84th Engineering Construction HQ CO from  February 12, 1952 to November 20, 1953. Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis held the rank of PFC and was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, 2 Overseas Service Bars, the National Defense Service Medal, and finally the Cold War Citation. Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis was honorably discharged from the United States Army on November 20, 1953.  He served his country with honor and dignity. Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis is a Life Member of Niles VFW Post 3579 and served in the Color Guard and as Golf Chairman for many years.  Charles  Simokaitis was the Past Commander of the  Greater Chicago Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association Post 25 that marched in the Memorial Day Parade.

Donald served his country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He was 92 years old. Donald was born on July 22nd, 1931 in Chicago to the late John Lepek and the late Martha Lepek (nee Ruthkowski). Devoted husband to the late Janet (nee Jenner). Beloved father to Michael Pappas (late Celia), Nicolette Pappas, and Donald J. Lepek, Jr. Loving grandfather to Mark, Stephanie Villanova (David), Tim, Tara, Noah. Loving great-grandfather to Lia and Zack Villanova. Cherished brother to his five late siblings.

Donald loved the city Chicago especially all of the cities’ sports teams. Great lover of movies and 40’s & 50’s music. He worked as a Lithographer for over 35 years before retiring. Above all, he was an avid family man. Family always came first to him. Donald Lepeck is a Life Member of Niles VFW Post 3579

Comrade Norbert P. Bernauer entered into the service of our country to defend, and yes, if need be to die for his country and flag.  Comrade Norbert P. Bernauer served in the United States Army on foreign lands in the Pacific Theater in the Korean War from September 26, 1951 to September 18, 1953 as a Combat Engineer with the 50th Engineer Port Construction Company, Far East Command (FEC). The official dates of the Korean War are from June 15, 1950 to July 27, 1953. Comrade Norbert P. Bernauer held the rank of Corporal and earned the following medals: the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and finally the Cold War Citation. Comrade Thomas J. Gierut entered into the service of our country on February 18, 1966 to defend, and yes, if need be to die for his country and flag.  Comrade Tom Gierut is a Korean War veteran and a Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Army on foreign lands in the Pacific Theater  in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division, 7th Infantry Division. Comrade Tom Gierut earned the following medals: the Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM), the Vietnam Campaign Medal (VCM), the Army Commendation Medal (ACM), the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Cold War Citation.  He served his country with distinction and was honorably discharged from the United States Army on June 14, 1968 with the rank of Sp/4. He fulfilled his 6 year reserve obligation on February 17, 1972. Thomas J. Gierut is a retired Chicago Police Dept. Officer.  Thomas J. Gierut was a life member of the Park Ridge / Niles Memorial VFW Post 3579 and served on the VFW Service Officer team performing numerous wakes.

Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis entered into the service of our country to Comrade Charlie Simokaitis served in the United States Army on foreign lands in the Pacific Theater in the Korean War. After graduating from the Structural Steel Course at Fort Leonard Wood, he was sent to Korea with the 84th Engineering Construction HQ CO from  February 12, 1952 to November 20, 1953. Comrade Charles A. Simokaitis held the rank of PFC and was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, 2 Overseas Service Bars, the National Defense Service Medal, and finally the Cold War Citation. Donald served his country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He was 92 years old. Donald was born on July 22nd, 1931 in Chicago to the late John Lepek and the late Martha Lepek (nee Ruthkowski). Devoted husband to the late Janet (nee Jenner). Beloved father to Michael Pappas (late Celia), Nicolette Pappas, and Donald J. Lepek, Jr. Loving grandfather to Mark, Stephanie Villanova (David), Tim, Tara, Noah. Loving great-grandfather to Lia and Zack Villanova. Cherished brother to his five late siblings.

Donald loved the city Chicago especially all of the cities’ sports teams. Great lover of movies and 40’s & 50’s music. He worked as a Lithographer for over 35 years before retiring. Above all, he was an avid family man. Family always came first to him. Donald Lepeck is a Life Member of Niles VFW Post 3579

The official dates of the Korean War are from June 15, 1950 to July 27, 1953. Comrade Norbert P. Bernauer held the rank of Corporal and earned the following medals: the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and finally the Cold War Citation.
